Isabel and the Hungry Coyote / Isabel y el coyote hambriento (Raven Tree Press, 2004), written by Keith Polette of El Paso, TX, was recently nominated for the Golden Spur Award. But the notoriety doesnít stop there. Isabel has now been chosen as a finalist for the 2005 Legacy Book Award. According to the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented, presenters of the award, ìIsabel and the Hungry Coyote / Isabel y el coyote hambriento represents one of the more outstanding examples of gifted literature in the nation and has been rated by our nationwide reviewers as having excellent promise and long-term potential for improving the lives of gifted children and youth in its category.î

 

Winners will be announced at the 2005 Professional Development Conference for Educators and Parents in San Antonio on November 25^th.

 

Isabel and the Hungry Coyote / Isabel y el coyote hambriento, is a wonderfully humorous tale in which tamales and chili sauce are the coyoteís downfall in a retelling of the classic Little Red Riding Hood story. Set in the American southwest, Isabel outwits coyote with self-reliance and bravery. The book features English text with intermittent Spanish.

 

Keith Polette is currently an Associate Professor of English and the Director of the English Education program at the University of Texas at El Paso.
