About this Book

It’s spring! The forest is full of newborn animals and plants. An April shower frightens Cinnamon, her new cub, and their woodland friends. Solomon Raven explains the importance of rain for animal and forest survival. Third is a four book seasonally themed series. This is the spring theme. See the other books in this series.

Robb Mommaerts has a style that is a cross between cartoon-like characterization, authenticity and his own playful imagination. Using elements of both fantasy and reality, Robb starts each illustration as a black and white colored pencil drawing on bristol board paper with a Berol Prismacolor® black pencil. He then colors the art in a layered digital Adobe® Photoshop file. Several overlays of color are used to achieve the look and mood that is needed. Many layers are transparent and gradations, as well as masks for the Solomon Raven Series illustrations.

Reviews/Readers Comments

"Robb Mommaerts' wonderful artwork in the Solomon Raven Series is very friendly and inviting; he has captured childlike fun with his unique and refreshing style."
Aaron Moriarity, Illustrator of Poppel and Poppel's Place (Poppel Press)

“The Solomon Raven Series is a fun way to learn the lessons of life and the engaging artwork gives the animals personalities of their own.”
Jean Peerenboom, Green Bay Press-Gazette

“Young children will easily learn about nature and animal habitats when you read to them the beautifully written books in Amy Crane Johnson's Solomon Raven Series. Robb Mommaert's illustrations are as velvety warm as Pearl Squirrel's nest. These are books to be enjoyed with your child.”
Shirley VerBruggen, Community Relations Manager, Barnes & Noble, Green Bay, WI

“…The text flows with ease and a charming simplicity, and the subtle illustrations will surely be enjoyed by readers. The book has a glossary of English and Spanish words. The bilingual format makes it a suitable addition to any collection.”
Críticas

“…like its predecessors, Mommaerts’s full-page cartoon illustrations have…child appeal. The big news here is the immense improvement in the translation. In the capable hands of de la Vega, the Spanish version is accurate and colloquial, a quantum leap…”
School Library Journal

Cinnamon & the April Shower is a bilingual (English/Spanish) picture book entertainingly written by Amy Crane Johnson, superbly illustrated by Robb Mommaerts, and translated by Eida de la Vega…Children ages 4 to 8 will be informed even as they are being entertained with this carefully crafted book that is a “must” for school and community bilingual picture book library collections.”
Midwest Book Review

“This Spanish/English picture book [Cinnamon & April Shower / Canela y el aguacero de abril] will help bring Spanish into the classroom. The glossary at the end of the book is useful to teachers before and during readings. The illustrations bring the animal’s concerns during the storm to life…I recommend the purchase of this book for libraries that are building bilingual book inventories.”
Lane Education Service District, Eugene, Oregon
