About this Book

Continuing the Solomon Raven series, Lewis Cardinal is confused as his woodland friends get ready for winter. Should he stay or go? Solomon explains hibernation and migration, leading Lewis to understand the process of change and friendship. Second in a four book seasonally themed series. This is the winter theme. See the other books in this series.

Robb Mommaerts has a style that is a cross between cartoon-like characterization, authenticity and his own playful imagination. Using elements of both fantasy and reality, Robb starts each illustration as a black and white colored pencil drawing on bristol board paper with a Berol Prismacolor® black pencil. He then colors the art in a layered digital Adobe® Photoshop file. Several overlays of color are used to achieve the look and mood that is needed. Many layers are transparent and gradations, as well as masks for the Solomon Raven Series illustrations.

Adwards/Reviews/Readers Comments

“Young Lewis Cardinal learns about hibernation and migration as his woodland friends get ready in different ways for winter. Colorful and dramatic illustrations by Robb Mommaerts show Lewis and Solomon Raven, the wisest bird in the forest, as they watch the flurry of autumn activity. Lewis begins to understand the process of change and friendship. This story, presented in both English and Spanish, follows the first Solomon Raven story; A Home for Pearl Squirrel and both are highly recommended.”

Aaron Moriarity, Illustrator of Poppel and Poppel's Place (Poppel Press)

“The Solomon Raven Series is a fun way to learn the lessons of life and the engaging artwork gives the animals personalities of their own.”
Jean Peerenboom, Green Bay Press-Gazette

“Young children will easily learn about nature and animal habitats when you read to them the beautifully written books in Amy Crane Johnson's Solomon Raven Series. Robb Mommaert's illustrations are as velvety warm as Pearl Squirrel's nest. These are books to be enjoyed with your child.”
Shirley VerBruggen, CRM, Barnes & Noble, Green Bay, WI

“The reassuring words of wise Solomon Raven and the subsequent appearance of an adorable little female cardinal put Lewis at his ease and leave him feeling secure again. The acrylic cartoon illustrations are big, bright, and appealing…”
School Library Journal

“…Winter won’t seem so bad after all! Another story about the forest animals that does a really nice job of introducing what animals do in the winter. Written in both English and Spanish, the text is simple, but the illustrations are gorgeous.”
