About this Book

Pearl learns about the different types of homes and habitats in which her woodland friends live and play. Diversity is explored and championed in this tale of self-appreciation. Home is where the heart is. First in a four book seasonally themed series. This is the fall theme. See the other books in this series.

Robb Mommaerts has a style that is a cross between cartoon-like characterization, authenticity and his own playful imagination. Using elements of both fantasy and reality, Robb starts each illustration as a black and white colored pencil drawing on bristol board paper with a Berol Prismacolor® black pencil. He then colors the art in a layered digital Adobe® Photoshop file. Several overlays of color are used to achieve the look and mood that is needed. Many layers are transparent and gradations, as well as masks for the Solomon Raven Series illustrations.

Awards/Reviews/Readers Comments

“… Solomon wisely shows her [Pearl] how a home must suit each inhabitant in just the right way for it to be a happy and sufficient home. This book is presented in both English and Spanish and would make a good read aloud.
Lane Education Service District

Robb Mommaerts' wonderful artwork in the Solomon Raven Series is very friendly and inviting; he has captured childlike fun with his unique and refreshing style.
Aaron Moriarity, Illustrator of Poppel and Poppel's Place (Poppel Press)

“The Solomon Raven Series is a fun way to learn the lessons of life and the engaging artwork gives the animals personalities of their own.”
Jean Peerenboom, Green Bay Press-Gazette

The comical illustrations enhance the story of a squirrel who gains confidence as she learns to appreciate the individuality and specific needs of others and herself.
Learning Abilities Books

Children and adults alike will enjoy the high quality, colorful illustrations. This book is recommended for parents and librarians wanting to teach children a second language (either English or Spanish).
REFORMA

“…Illustrations showing cuddly animals with big, loving eyes accompany this book, which teaches children the lesson of everyone needing to find their own unique and special place. Because the text is written in both English and Spanish, a large audience may benefit from its humor and wisdom.”
Children’s Literature

“… A simple lesson on diversity maybe? The illustrations are gorgeous. As you read, you feel that these illustrations could easily become a cartoon. Rich and beautiful they tell the story right along with the text. My school has a great need for books written in both English and Spanish. We have Language Center classes and this makes it easier for them to get a good story, and then see how it translates into English. A real plus for this series of stories.”
Fort Worth I.S.D. Book Reviews

“Young children will easily learn about nature and animal habitats when you read to them the beautifully written books in Amy Crane Johnson's Solomon Raven Series. Robb Mommaert's illustrations are as velvety warm as Pearl Squirrel's nest. These are books to be enjoyed with your child.”
Shirley VerBruggen, CRM, Barnes & Noble-Green Bay
